Push 3 and Logic Pro for iPad Released On Same Day (Today!)

Wow! What a day! Sitting around waiting for the release of Logic Pro on the iPad (1 pm Miami time), I discover Push 3 for Ableton Live is a thing. Today.

It looks fabulous, of course, but the standalone model is $2K! And I thought Push2 was expensive. And why I feel so guilty that I haven’t been able to really learn Push2.

It was more alluring before Logic Pro 10 came out with a drum sequencer, which came out soon after I bought Push2. Yikes! Will the competition ever stop? lol!

You can find out more about Push 3 here and here and here and here and a whole bunch of other places – lol!

GarageBand Weekly discusses Logic 3 for the iPad. I’ll be on the lookout for more info on this one.

Kitten Loves Logic Pro, Too! (#music #production #logicpro #ableton #push2

Well, you saw our new kitten being totally fascinated by Push2 in Ableton Live in this video, but now it looks like he loves Logic Pro, too. Even he can’t decide which one to use – lol!

Screamie and the Cats #NewKitten #MusicProduction

This is what happens when you get a new kitten – lol! The oldest cat loves to sing, especially into the microphone, and has already left his vocals on this track in progress. Now the new kitten (shown in the video) is fascinated with Push2 and Ableton Live.

I’m calling it “Screamie and the Cats.” Check it out on YouTube.

First Monday of 2022 #Ableton #Push #Max4Live

I told myself I really should focus on Ableton Live and Push in 2022. That I really mustn’t waste the money. That it should be considered my Christmas present, even though I got Push during 50/90. Only I was too busy writing 60 songs to do much with Push.

And so today I had a blast playing around with programming drums and bass in Push, throwing a Max Live reverb onto the vocals. It’s just a start, but at least I’m moving forward.

2021 Accomplishments, 2022 Goals

I couldn’t let this year pass by without acknowledging what I’ve accomplished artistically in 2021.

The top 3 accomplishments of 2021 are:

  1. FAWM (February Album Writing Month) in February – write 14 songs during the month of February. I believe this is the first year I met that goal
  2. 50/90 (write 50 songs in 90 days – I wrote 60) – meeting that goal was also a first for me – my top 12 (plus a bonus track) were uploaded as an album on Bandcamp.
  3. NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) – I managed to use all 12 of my membership feedback credits, which is another first for me

The top 3 goals for 2022:

Upgrading my Reverbnation account to Pro for 2022. As for the rest, I haven’t really locked this down yet. Under consideration:

  1. FAWM
  2. 50/90
  3. NSAI
  4. Ableton Push
  5. Fiction

As vague as usual when it comes to writing vs music. Some things I will just have to let unfold.

Wishing you all the best in 2022!

Drummer Dottie Dodgion Leads Me To Ableton Live/Push2

So I’m thinking I need to know more about drumming since the drums seem to be my favorite instrument in electronic music. I searched online for “female drummer,” thinking I’d be able to relate even more since the music industry is so heavily male. And who do I find but Dottie Dodgion who drummed with all the greats in her time until she was 91. We’re talking the 50s/60s when a female drummer was unheard of. I also discovered she died just this last September.

And then I discovered her autobiography The Lady Swings: Memoirs of a Jazz Drummer. So, naturally, I snapped that up, and I am completely enthralled with her story. And completely humbled. Her father was a drummer so she internalized all that he knew and did, besides having inherited those genes, and a lifetime of learning and practicing and loving her instrument.

My father said, after I met him later in life, “All my kids play the drums.” In fact, his grandson, my nephew, earned a degree in Jazz Performance at Fresno State. You guessed it – he played drums.

And then my life started to make a lot of sense. My uncle said “Now that you know you’re a Holmes, you’re going to want to pay attention to music.” I’ve always loved music, sang and played the keys, guitar, violin when I was young, but didn’t really do much with it as an adult beyond turning the radio up loud, windows rolled down, racing my black Pontiac down Cornell Road in Portland, Oregon.

Although most of the music I create usually falls into the “House” category of EDM, I love all genres, including Jazz. Naturally (I keep using that word), I desired to know more about it and downloaded the Peter Magadini Jazz Drums tutorial from Groove3.

I’m totally intimidated, realizing that being a traditional drummer is beyond me (or, at least, my interest), but I can learn a lot by knowing as much as I can about the drums by studying different genres.

I also realized that this is where Ableton Live shines over Logic Pro, at least to me, when it comes to programming drums using the drum rack and Push2. I am finally motivated to spend more time learning Ableton and Push.

My Logic Pro 10.7 Upgrade May Send Me Back to Ableton Live (#LogicPro10.7 #AbletonLive)

Logic Pro 10.7 is here. Yay! I was up all night working through tutorials so I would have a clue how to get started this morning when my download appeared. But I’ve been having 2 major problems (even after changing the project settings sample rate to 48 and buffer size to 512 per tutorial instruction):

  1. My file for my small 5-bar track is too big to email or upload to free plans (need upgraded size plan for SoundCloud and Reverbnation)
  2. And while I could upload the file to this blog with my wordpress upgrade, the song can’t be heard on Firefox, which was never a problem before. (Remember to listen in headphones.)

Back to searching online for more videos to see if anybody talks about these issues. Not only that, but if I want to close the Dolby plugin, I have to change my display settings to the default small, which is way too small for my eyes.

So, either I:

  1. Reinstall the previous version (thankfully, I saved it before I upgraded)
  2. Put Logic away until there’s more information about this “Export file” problem (now that you cannot “Bounce” or certainly not export just a section of the song)
  3. Keep hammering away at this problem (I think I might have solved the plugin accessibility issue)
  4. Finally switch to Ableton for good

While Dolby Atmos may be cool, do I really have a need for Dolby Atmos? If not, how do I use LP without it, as in bouncing a file to an mp3 seamlessly. As for the Dolby Atmos plugin being “integrated,” having it pop up off the screen when my display settings are enhanced isn’t really integrated. Ableton Live plugins are truly integrated and why I’ve always preferred Ableton plugins.

Logic Pro has always been a bit complicated for me. I think it just got too complicated. Can we really not bounce a file to mp3 like we used to? What am I missing?

What about you? Have you run into any “gotchas”? How about solutions to my problem? lol!
